Silverton, once the playground of Silver Barons and Railroad Kings, is in the incredibly rugged San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Its rich mining history, Victorian construction, and the Durango-Silverton railroad make it a richly rewarding destination for tourists in Colorado. This town saw mass amounts of gold and silver ore brought in from the surrounding mountains, for smelting and shipment to the outside world. Royalty and nobles from Europe made Silverton a major stop on the West's tourist scene a century ago. The entire town, the "Silver Queen" of Colorado, is an historic district.
