In 1881, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad established a small siding named Lariat, which evolved into Monte Vista, named for the famous views of the surrounding mountains. The oldest pro rodeo in Colorado, the Ski-Hi Stampede, has been held in July since 1919. Today many buildings in town are listed on the National Historic Register.
