La Junta means "the junction" in Spanish. La Junta was founded in 1881 as a railroad town, serving the cattle and agriculture industries' needs for railroad access. Elm trees proliferate in La Junta's older neighborhoods. The importance of the railroads began to dry up in the 1980s, and today La Junta has attracted and continues to look for light industries for the La Junta Industrial Park.
