Golden was first founded to support the busy miners and mining industry further up in the Rocky Mountains. Golden served as Colorado's first official territorial capital for several years, and became an important railway terminus for several decades for supplies, gold oar, and coal. Coors Brewery, the Mother Cabrini Shrine, the USGS Earthquake Center, Heritage Square, Astor House Hotel Museum, Golden Pioneer Museum, Buffalo Bill's Museum, Colorado Railroad Museum, Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, Foothills Art Center, and Twelfth Street Historic District are all local or nearby attractions.
