In the first exciting months of Colorado's 1959 gold rush, a major strike was found by George Griffith, who brought in several of his brothers to help mine the gold; his claim was named George's Town. Ultimately silver would be the driving force behind Georgetown's development. Today, Georgetown is an important Victorian tourist town on I-70 which heads west to the ski areas and other central Colorado attractions. Some of the most amazing feats of American railroading engineering occured from Georgetown up the Silver Plume and to the Waldorf mining camp. At the foot of Guanella Pass, Georgetown today is a charming historic Victorian town hosting the famous Georgetown Loop Railroad.
