A great way to see the area is via train; the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers a journey back in time on a steam powered locomotive. Completed in 1881, the railway was originally constructed to haul silver and gold ore, throughout Colorado. However, it soon became popular with passenger trains as well for the amazing views. Another must-see attraction is a visit to Mesa Verde National Park, one of the most well-preserved archeological sites in the United States. Mesa Verde is known for their amazing cliff dwellings where humans lived over 700 years ago. Talk about a trip back in history! The park is located just 35 miles from downtown Durango.
In addition to Mesa Verde, the area is home to a plethora of historical attractions like the Ute Mountain Tribal Park, Hovenweep National Monument, the Anasazi Heritage Center and Crow Canyon Archaeological Cente,giving the area an appropriate nickname as the “archeological center of America.”
