The Chaffee Shuttle is the local shuttle system and will even take you to Salida. The shuttle is a demand/response public transit service. Just give them a call and they will come to your door, pick you up, and take you to wherever you are needing to go. They are a free service, but donations are appreciated to keep the shuttle up and running to better serve the community.
If you are needing a ride to Denver, The Arrow or Black Hills Stage Lines Bus is available. The bus does not go all the way to Denver International Airport, but there is an RTD bus you can take from the Greyhound bus stop in Denver. There is no charge if you have a bus ticket from the same day.
If you plan on travelling quite a bit, consider a rental car, which is easy to add to your plans if you plan to fly into Denver before heading west into the mountains. Driving will make it much easier to get to nearby attractions and events.
There is also an airport for flying in and out of Buena Vista. Whatever your needs, there are plenty of options to get you to your destination.
