Royal Gorge Route Railroad, Cañon City, CO

Ride the historic rails through the entire bottom of the Royal Gorge alongside the Arkansas River with shear 1,000 feet cliffs rising right next to you. Class V river rafting and kayaking dot the rapids in bright orange and red. Look for eagles, deer, flowering cactus, old wooden water pipes and deserted cabins. The train stops for photo opportunities on the Hanging Bridge, named because the narrowness of the canyon here mandated engineers to hang supports on either side of the canyon walls. Look up the cliffs to the Suspension Bridge high above you. The original railroad tracks were laid over 120 years ago amidst a hostile railroad war between two railroad companies. Passenger and freight service continued until 1967 when passenger service was discontinued. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad brought back passenger service in 1999, as a tourist attraction in grand style. This popular two hour train ride through the bottom of this spectacular gorge is an unforgettable experience.
